Wardens' Reports

Senior Warden's Report
Your vestry is still awaiting the arrival of the first names of candidates for Rector from the Diocese. Our position opening was announced on the Church Deployment Web site in early May. In the last month, we hope some candidates have found us and submitted their names to the Diocese where they are reviewed and approved by the Bishop before being submitted to us. It shouldnA‹ft be too much longer now.
Plans are moving ahead for the reception to honor Father Harry on June 27 from 4 to 6 pm. You have received a letter from me about this reception, letting you know of other ways in which you can thank Father Harry for his ministry here at Annunciation. We look forward to a very special time with him on the 27th.
It is important for all of us to stick together as we work our way through this time of transition. We have a parish to be proud of. We are financially sound and spiritually growing. We are going to miss Father Harry, but I am sure the Lord has new challenges and new discoveries ahead of us if we can keep the faith through uncertain times. Our congeniality as a church family means all the more to us as we move ahead into uncharted waters.
I ask your prayers for the Vestry and for the parish in the months ahead. If you have questions donA‹ft hesitate to contact me or any Vestry member listed to the left on this page.
Dick Hussey, 792-7183

Junior Warden's Report
May finds us warm and dry. What a glorious month.
The gardens are a bit parched but colorful all the same. The Memorial Garden is beautiful with the recently planted coangela and the fresh mulch. Many thanks to Cecil and Jackie Pepka. We are entertaining proposals to repair the sprinkler system and then will reshell the parking areas. The hand railings have all been repainted and we recently made repairs to the HVAC system, the hot water tank in the rectory and some electrical repairs. Ahh, the joys of getting older.
Over all the church's buildings and grounds are in nice condition with regular maintenance and an able set of hands arranging for the many ministries our church hosts during the month. What a joyful, welcoming church we have, thanks to you. If you have an event and need to use our facilities please fill out a "request for usage" so that we can prepare correctly for your event.
We are preparing our physical plant to be as spiffy as possible for our celebration of Father Harry's retirement Receptõon June 27. If anyone see something that needs repair, please let me know.

In Christ,
Barry L. Peterson 941-587-4658

Farewell Reception for Fr. Harry Scheduled for June 27

The Vestry has scheduled a Farewell reception for Father Harry for Sunday, June 27, from 4 to 6 pm. At that time, parishioners are invited to gather in Lowe Hall to celebrate his ministry with us and wish him well in his retirement.Father Harry came to Annunciation on June 1, 2003 after serving as Assistant Rector at St. Thomas Church, Snell Island; Good Samaritan Church, Clearwater, and as Rector at St. Bartholomew's Church in St. Petersburg. Since coming to Annunciation, he has led us in a repair and renovation program that has left our facilities attractive, safe, and ready for maximum use by our parishioners. He has attracted many new families to our parish, and sheltered all of us under his wing with caring and compassion. He has healed the divides that separated us, and left us a healthy, happy, financially sound congregation, busy doing the Lord's work in our community and the world.
Father Harry will be with us through June, on vacation in July, and on sabbatical in August. He will probably be living in the rectory through most of that time. His retirement officially begins September 1. What are his plans for retirement? Nothing firm at this point. He will spend the summer making those plans. Since most of us can't imagine him just sitting in the sun and enjoying his idleness, he is likely to find meaningful part-time work that will allow him to share his many skills and continue his ministry in a more relaxed way.

Summer Supply Schedule In Place

As in other summers, we will have just one worship service on Sundays at 9 AM from June 6 through the month of September. Leading us on July 4 will be the Rev. Parke Allis our own parishioner. Through the remainder of July and the first three weeks in August, our leader will be the Rev. Russell Johnson, the former Dean of the diocese's cathedral of St Peter's in St. Petersburg. The Rt. Rev. Michael Garrison, Bishop of Western New York, a frequent visitor at Annunciation will lead our services on August 22 and August 29. Father Russell Johnson will return for the month of September. We are hoping to have a new priest in charge shortly after that.
The availability of Thursday services through the summer will be announced in early June. Our deacons, the Rev. Irvin and Joyce Maranville will be available for emergencies through the summer; we will also have access to a priest if needed.

Adult Class
The adult class meets at 10:30 in Lowe Hall each week, and everyone is invited to attend. Even if you can not make consecutive classes you will get a lot out of the ones you attend. We start with a DVD and end with discussion.

DEACON's CORNER
Why Do We Pray?
By Deacon Irvin Maranville

I have long been interested in "Why people come to Church" and if this "Why" was being accomplished. I recently read something which shed some more light on this question for me and I will pass it on. "Deep in the traditions of Christians, Jews and Muslims is the understanding of the necessity for the daily praise of God."
Muslims have never seen prayer as "asking". They know little of petitions in prayer, yet every Muslim is required to praise God five times a day, at dawn, at noon, in late afternoon, at sunset, and at night. Jews understand this, also. The tradition of Judaism is to pray three times a day (as Jesus and his disciples did) at morning, noon, and evening. Christians enter into this tradition by praising God with Morning and Evening Prayer, which is the invitation of the Church for all to join in the ceaseless and daily praise of God.
I will ask you now to get out your Book of Common Prayer. Nearly every Episcopalian has one. They often are not sure exactly where it is, and when it is found it is either in a completely new condition, or it is mostly unused with the exception of those pages dealing with public worship, but they do have one.
Please place your prayer book in an easily accessible spot of your house, and go to it regularly. As you leaf through it, you will find many delightful offerings. I ask you to be especially aware of how often and where the words "Worship" and "Thanks" appear. Please note that the Holy Communion of both Rites I and II starts with "The Great Thanksgiving", and ends with the peoples response to the Deacon's dismissal of "Thanks be to God."
Not many of us observe daily, Morning, and Evening Prayer. (Or do we?) But, we do attend Sunday services, say grace at our meals, and we offer many unspoken prayers of gratitude for our own personal creation, preservation, and for all the blessings of our lives, as we are experiencing them.
I suggest that, whether we are aware of it or not, we do have an understanding of the necessity for the daily praise of God. This keeps us aware of our place in God's creation and of God's place in our lives.

Summer Events to Look Forward To
The Events Committee has scheduled three events for the summer months:

July 25 Potluck and a Movie
Ed Upshaw is chair of this evening. Stay tuned for details on the movie and a sign up sheet for food. Also, Ed will be looking for a couple of people to help him with set up and planning.
August 22 Burgers, Brats & Bingo
Jack and Ann Lewis are chairing the food portion of this event, and Barbara Vedder will head up the Bingo. This was done here several summers ago and people had a wonderful time. There will be a sign up sheet for what to bring, and some help will be needed. Let them know if you can help.
Sept 26 Potluck and a Movie
This is going to be a theme night with the theme carrying over from the food to the movie choice. Intriguing? Jack and Ann Lewis are in charge of this one, and they will be looking for some help. A signup sheet will go up a few weeks before.

Summer Thoughts
By Deacon Joyce Maranville

Normally just one of the Deacons writes the column for the monthly Annunciator. As this is the last edition until September, it seemed a good idea for us both to write. This will be short!
First, may I wish you all a very happy summer, with lots of spare time and happy reunions with family and friends. Wherever you may be traveling, do keep Annunciation in your prayers, that the right person for Annunciation will be moved to apply for the position soon to be vacated by Fr. Harry. (Also, pray that the Vestry may be given the wisdom and the vision to recognize that right person.)
Whether we stay in Bradenton or travel far afield, let us all remember the Two Great Commandments. First, to love the Lord our God. Second, to love our neighbor as ourselves. I often am dazzled by how simple are the words of Jesus. There are no great books written by Him. In a nutshell He says "Love one another". Let our prayer this summer be that we may be able to follow His instructions.
We look forward to seeing you all in Church.

Our Daily Bread Needs You
Their recent newsletter states that Our Daily Bread, fed 87,000 meals in 2009\and an average of 270 a day for the first quarter of 2010. In April, their numbers were down to 240 a day\still a huge number of homeless, hungry people right in our community. They are in need of some additional help now, as many of their volunteers are winter residents who have gone home. They need cooks and kitchen help on weekday mornings, a van driver, and a volunteer coordinator. If you can help, you can call them at 745-2992. Or talk to Bill and Sue Wait or Don and Julie Lind who are regular volunteers there. Your support is appreciated.

MUSIC'S CORNER

Wow, I cannot believe another choir season has gone by so quickly! By the time this is published, we will have had our annual choir party at the Fetterman household, and completed our 2009-2010 choir season.
It has been another successful year of song, praise and growth in our group, and I look forward to planning the 2010-2011 choir season. We will take our hiatus for the summer, but rehearsals will pick up again in mid-September. Since January, we have been meeting on Wednesday nights due to a conflict in Carolefs school schedule, but this fall we will go back to meeting on Thursday nights.
We will also be bidding gadieuh to our Rector and fearless leader, Father Harry Parsell. Father Harry has been a strong supporter of our music program | especially to The Gallery Choir. On Sundays when he has been touched or moved by our music, he has shared his feelings to the congregation before dismissal. This has been so appreciated, and has made us feel so good about what we are doing as an ensemble. Father Harry has also visited our rehearsals from time to time, and has always been so complimentary and kind | giving us that extra boost to do our best for the following Sunday. We will miss you so much, Father Harry, and we wish you the best in your retirement. You deserve it!
This summer, Scott, the kids and I will be heading up to Valparaiso, IN to visit family and friends for a couple of weeks | something we have not had a chance to do since the winter of 2008. We look forward to watching the kids run around in their bare feet, not having to worry about fire ants, snakes or alligators? Ethan Dudley will be subbing for me in my absence.
Also, Thom will be taking a couple of weeks off in August and my friend, David Katz will be subbing for him. Have a great vacation Thom!
Otherwise, the rest of the summer, the music will be supplied by Thom Tenny, Tom Benjamin (occasional jazzy postludes) and myself. We hope you enjoy what we have planned for the 9:00 a.m. summer services! Have a great summer, everyone!

Yours in music,
Carole Cornman Fetterman,
Choir Director

ECW Honors Mary Saunders as "Woman of the Year"

The board of the Episcopal Church Women voted Mary Saunders as our Woman of the Year for 2010. In a presentation at the 10:30 service on April 25, Caroline Powers noted that Mary serves the church as an acolyte and in the choir. Mary is a member of the Daughters of the King, a service order of Episcopal Women. She is our coffee hour hostess every week of the year, going out of her way to make it special with seasonal table decorations, pretty napkins, and many little extras. Everyone goes to Mary for help in the kitchen, and she is always willing to help make the coffee for a potluck, brunch, or soup supper. We salute you, Mary.

PRAYER NEEDS

Adding a Name to the Prayer Chain
By Jeanne Akers
I am not sure if everyone knows that a number of years ago the Daughters of the King started a prayer chain at Annunciation. This chain consists of a number of prayer-dedicated people who pray daily (and sometimes more) for names given them by friends and family. These prayers are kept up for ten days. All one has to do to add a name to the prayer list is to call one of these persons or the church office.
Carol Broden... 794-0797
Caroline Powers..729-3798
Jeanne Akers... 792-4533
This Chain is not to be confused with our regular prayer list at church. You may always call the office to have someone put on that list also. Our chain is mainly for immediate intervention.

ATTENTION!!!!
Don't forgetAA‹ac
Most of us are so fortunate we forget that others in our community are in need of basic food supplies.
Please bring non-perishable food items each Sunday to supply the food bank at Roser Chapel. Suggested food items: peanut butter, tuna fish, dinner in a box, beans, snack packs, etc. There is a basket for food near the entrance of the church. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Your Help is Needed
The Community Coalition for the Homeless/Open Door Day Resource Center is in dire need of travel size soaps, shampoos, deodorants, etc These items are used for ditty bags for the homeless when they come into the center. We also need clothing: jeans, work pants, t-shirts, socks, shoes, work boots, underwear, etc. We are not asking for new; gently loved would do. These folks have nothingAA‹acsomething would be a lot.
We also need backpacks.
We are still in need of bikes and bike locks.
We also need help with our Annual Stand Down.
For more information, please call Trudie Bailey 723-2098 or
jimbaile@tampabay.rr.com.
Ministry Opportunity
It doesnAA‹aft take an extraordinary person to make a difference to others. It takes the ordinary personAA‹afs willingness to extend GodAA‹afs loving arms that can bring joy, comfort, and hope that make a difference in anotherAA‹afs life. We will soon begin a Ministry of Care. A group of note writers is needed to meet twice monthly. Cards for remembering birthdays, anniversaries, welcome, farewell, get well, sympathy etc. will be prayerfully completed for members and friends of Annunciation. Please contact Lorraine in the church office or drop off a note with you name and phone number and days of the week you can or cannot meet. January, 2008 is our goal to begin the Note WriterAA‹afs Society here at the Church. Is this an opportunity for you to care?
Is your Capital Fund Pledge up to date?
Most of us made multi-year pledges to the Capital Fund last year. We are now nearing the end of year 2, and a number of second-year pledges have not been paid. If you have questions about your pledge, contact Jack Lewis at jlewis4570@comcast.net. We really appreciate your support.
Save Your Box tops!
Notice the bag on the bulletin board to collect Box tops for Education. We ask you to check your cereal, cake, yogurt and other containers for these specially marked box tops which bring cash for special needs at the school on the island. Please put them in the plastic bag on the board. Thanks.

We Need Your HELP!

OUR CHURCH IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER DRIVERS to transport certain members of our Parish to their Medical Appointments/Church Activities. These parish members do not drive and /or have special needs that would prohibit them from driving.
Procedures to be followed:
A. Provide round trip transportation to and from the appointment or activity.
B. Medical appointments would be within the local Bradenton Area.
C. the parish member would call the volunteer and make arrangements at least 3 or 4 days in advance of the date and time of their need.
D. The church will not provide funds, vehicles or insurance for this activity. this is strictly a "do it for a friend in need" volunteer activity.
Can you help? Can you volunteer for a trip or two?? Contact Bill Wait (722-3805)
Volunteer Drivers: Irv Maranville - (761-8181), Jeanne Akers - (792-4533)

MORE DRIVERS ARE WELCOME AND NEEDED!

A Note From Our Money Counters
Teams of trained volunteers count the collection money following each Sunday service. They would appreciate it if you would use your donation envelopes each week, rather than just tossing a check in the plate. Writing your name and dollar amount on the envelope makes their job a little easier, and it also assures that you will get credit on your statement for tax purposes at the end of the year. Thank you.

If you are going into the hospital or know of someone from our Parish going in, please let Father Harry know.
