Sunday School Volunteer for September 5th: Jeanne Colwell

Our celebrant today is Fr. Russell Johnson.
The Very Rev. Dr. Russell Johnson is married to Judith and together they have four children and five grandchildren.  He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and served 13 years in the United States Marine Corps as both infantry officer in Viet Nam and later as a Jet pilot for nine years.  He graduated from the School of Theology, University of the South in Sewanee, TN in 1982 and later received his doctorate from the same University.  From 2004 until his retirement in 2009 he served as Dean of St. Peter's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.  Prior to that he was rector of four other churches over a period of 22 years.  For many years he was a conference presenter for the Disciples of Christ in Community Program helping the adult education program spread all across the church.  Judith and he used to run marathons but now they simply chase one another in retirement.
On Sunday, Sept 5,  9:15-10:15 AM  Fr. Russell Johnson will lead what he is calling Propers and Potpurri.  The discussion will start with some thoughts on the day’s lessons, and from there it may take off in any direction as we relate the message to our daily experiences.   All are welcome, even if you can’t come every single week.  Each lesson stands alone.

We ask your prayers for:
Bud Edgren - another round of chemo
Ruth Johnson - Merilyn Smith's mother

Prayer for Election of a Rector
Almighty God, giver of every good gift:
Look graciously on your Church,
and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish,
that we may receive a faithful pastor,
who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

NEW & IMPORTANT Back to two services Sept 5.  We will return to our winter schedule of Sunday services with services at 8 AM and 10:30 AM on Sept 5.  The adult class will be held (9:15-10:15) and will be led by Fr. Russ Johnson, focusing on discussion of the day’s lectionary lessons.  Fr. Johnson will lead our services throughout September.

Thanks so much to Jack and Ann Lewis and Barbara Vedder who chaired the Burgers, Brats, and Bingo night.
Everyone had lots of fun, and the food was wonderful.  We may have to do this again in the winter months.
Our next social event is Sun September 26 when we will enjoy potluck and a movie. Mark your calendar NOW.  Jack and Ann Lewis will chair this event.  Call Ann to let her know you can help with set up, serving, or clean up.

Your help needed!

The Sunday School is working on some surprises for the Holly Berry Bazaar  and need some supplies.  They are looking for toilet paper tubes.  They are also looking for small about 10-18 oz jars.  The size that peanut butter or mayo (small size) comes in. (Smaller than 30 oz) There will be a box in Lowe Halll where you may leave them.  THANKS.

What’s a sharing group?
A group who meet together regularly to share their ideas, life stories, experiences etc.  We know each other well enough to chat at coffee hour, but here is a chance to get to know some folks a little better.  Deacon Irv will lead a new sharing group on Monday, September 13 at 10 AM.  Come and see!

Quilt Presentation Party
We are planning to have a Quilt Presentation gathering on Sunday, September 19, to present the completed Memory Quilt to Father Harry. It will be at Caroline and Larry’s home at 3855 3rd Ave. West, Palmetto from 4-6pm. Some of us plan to go to dinner at The Riverhouse Reef & Grill (at the end of the dock at the marina) following the gathering. Please RSVP to Caroline at 941-729-3798 or to candlpowers@att.net by September 12.

No Thursday Services in September:
There will be no Thursday morning healing services, probably not until the new Rector arrives.   If you are home-bound and would like to receive Holy Communion, contact the church office at 778-1638.
